I took a road trip this weekend, to the lovely city of Duluth, MN, with my kindred spirit, Coral. There's a lot of places that I like to go, a lot that I like to see. But Duluth is a special exception. I always want to go to Duluth. If you have not yet had the great fortune of making up to this Lake Superior city, allow me to give you a little synopsis of why I love it so very much.
First of all- Duluth is full of adventure. And because of that, it's full of adventurous people. Around every corner is an opportunity to do something exciting, to meet someone who may seem ordinary but is far from it. I'm sure you could argue that you can find this in any city, but I'm going to choose to politely disagree. Duluth carries with it it's own type of magic. The waves of the lake stir up something inside of me that makes me want to explore; the hills of the city make me want to hike anywhere and everywhere; the constant, cool wind makes me want to swing on my backpack and just go.
Another reason that I love Duluth is that it is so very cozy. Cozy is my favorite word, feeling, emotion, whatever you want to call it. The chilly temperatures that Duluth has pretty much year round just makes me want to pull on a sweater and some of my warmest socks, turn on some warm lights, and drink some coffee. (By the way, Duluth sells their own brand of coffee- I bought some this weekend.) Being cozy is important to me because it is when I am the most content. I think a lot of people don't like winter and the cold months because they are, well, cold. But I like them because I am blessed by things like fireplaces and tea kettles and the like to warm me up, and that makes me the happiest of all. Similarly, I think a lot people don't like rainy weather because it is dark and grey and "depressing"- but I like this weather most of all. Don't be alarmed- I'm don't sit in a dungeon and brood in the darkness all day. I like rainy, stormy weather because it allows me to be cozy. There's a lot of other reasons I like the rain, but I'll get to that some other time. For now, just know that Duluth is good at being cozy. Very good at it.
When Coral (my kindred spirit) and I went to Duluth, we explored, we relaxed, we biked, we got wet, we got warm, we saw beauty, we admired the lake, we bought mugs, we chatted with the locals, we drank warm drinks, and a lot of other things too. I liked this day a lot, because Coral and I got to see a lot of beautiful things. To me, the little things mean the most. That's what this day was about. At one point, Coral turned to me and said, "Thanks for going to Duluth with me today." I smiled, because I was thinking the exact same thing. It takes a special person to want to spend a whole day adventuring with them, and that's who Coral is to me. She's wonderful and I laugh harder than ever when I'm with her. She loves Duluth too, so that's pretty neat. Our motto for our day in Duluth was saying, "Spirit of adventure!" and throwing our fists into the air. We did that a lot throughout the day, whenever we weren't sure what to do next, or if we were excited about something, or if we just hadn't said anything in a while. I loved this day that was full of the spirit of adventure, in one of my favorite places, with one of my favorite people.
If you haven't been to Duluth, go there now. If you have, go again.
